The Tier 2 Activity Directory contains shared ideas of Tier 2 extra-curricular activities (unpaid) which can be used by establishments to develop regimes in prisons, in line with the Tiered Regime Model. The Directory aims to capture examples of Tier 2 activity in one place to improve information sharing. The directory is designed to inform prisons on what Tier 2 activities they can consider but shouldn’t prevent local innovation, involving staff, prisoners, and 3rd Sector agencies.

In January 2021 HMPPS Prison COVID-19 Gold Command published the first in an anticipated series of learning briefings on COVID-19 learning. It is intended that these will be published monthly to share learning on a specific theme or topic with the frontline.

The briefings will not include set actions or guidance that must be followed or adopted by establishments, but are instead intended to harness learning on a particular point and highlight how this can be adopted by the frontline to improve operation or resilience in a particular.

It is hoped that sharing learning or practice which has proved effective will provide opportunities for establishments to improve their own practice in a variety of areas.

The Prison Technology Transformation Programme (PTTP), which is rolling out a new technology service across HMPSS to replace the Quantum Service with MoJ Official, is starting to look at Phase 3 planning. Members of the programme will be in touch with each of the Prison Group Directors over the next week to review the national site order for roll out. In response to feedback that a dress uniform presence can bring significant comfort to bereaved families and colleagues as well as the reassurance that this service is safe to operate with COVID controls in place, staff /establishments can now officially request/order ceremonial dress. Please note that staff are asked to make sure their attendance in funerals is in line with current government restrictions. Please see the document for more information.

Increasing SOP registration of Vaccination Status (22.10.21)

The HMPPS Vaccination Team recently completed a piece of work which looked into how establishments could improve the number of staff completing their vaccination status on SOP.  They have now produced a best practice document with the help of HMP Nottingham to assist establishments going forward.  As a result of their work HMP Nottingham have been very successful in engaging staff and have seen results which are well above the overall establishment averages. The below document sets out the steps taken and can be used as a guide for other establishments.

New Local Covid -19 Staff Vaccination Report (20.08.21)

We understand that staff vaccination reporting on SOP is not currently giving us an accurate picture of staff vaccination coverage across the estate. With this in mind we have worked with HR services to develop a report that Hub Mangers can access for their establishment which identifies if any information has been entered onto SOP regarding vaccination status.  A list can then be produced of all staff with no information entered which can be passed to line mangers and may assist in prompting conversations with these staff members and improving reporting. In-line with data privacy this report will only provide an overview of all directly employed PSP staff and whether each member of staff has reported their vaccination on SOP.

The new report is called: HR WF87 – Local Staff Covid-19 Vaccination

We are hopeful that this report will enable prisons to bridge the gap between the number of staff vaccinated and those registration on SOP.
